Empowering People with Disability to Claim Their Human Rights

The How to Claim Your Human Rights project, proudly funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services, supports people with disability, families and carers to understand and act on their rights in daily life. Grounded in co-design and lived experience, the project strengthens confidence, leadership, and community impact.

Step 1: Understanding Human Rights in Everyday Life

The project helps people with disability, families, and carers recognise their rights, not just as legal principles, but as real, everyday entitlements in the services and supports they use.

Step 2: Co-Designing with Lived Experience

People with lived experience lead the co-design of all project activities and resources.

Step 3: Building Skills and Confidence

Workshops and peer-led groups help participants identify when rights are being met or denied and build the confidence to speak up.

Step 4: Strengthening Communication and Negotiation

Training and resources developed through the co-design process will provide people with practical tools to claim their rights and influence how supports are delivered in a respectful and empowering way.

Step 5: Creating Ongoing Community Impact

Peer leaders continue to share knowledge, lead discussions, and build awareness in their communities.
