Claim Your Rights

How to Claim Your Human Rights

B-HART is proud to lead the How to Claim Your Human Rights initiative in collaboration with six leading disability advocacy and community organisations. The project supports people with disability, families and carers to understand and act on their rights in daily life. Grounded in co-design and lived experience, the project strengthens confidence, leadership, and community impact.

Proudly funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.

Our Consortium Partners

Our consortium partners represent a broad section of the disability community to ensure all training and resources developed throughout this co-design process will advance the human rights for all people living with disability and meet their unique needs.

Impact Stories

Deafblind Victoria

Claiming Space at VCAT

In a B-HART co-design session, a peer leader prepared for a common challenge: not being given enough time to communicate at VCAT. When the situation occurred, they used the language they had practised and successfully requested accessible communication — ensuring their right was respected.

SACID

“I didn’t know I had rights.”

Through the How to Claim Your Human Rights Project, a SACID peer leader built confidence, developed advocacy skills, and is now contributing more actively to inclusive design and supporting others to speak up.

“We have built systems that are ableist in their nature, and that leads people to see challenges where they actually should be seeing opportunities.”

From Co-Design to Community Resources

Insights from our co-design sessions with people with disability and families are now being developed into practical resources. These resources will be trialled with the community, tested in real-world situations, and refined through feedback before wider release.

This ensures the tools we create are practical, accessible, and genuinely useful, shaped by lived experience every step of the way.
