The "How to Claim Your Human Rights" project aims to build the capacity of people with disabilities, their families, and support networks to recognise Human Rights practices and self-advocate to claim them in everyday life situations.

Our fantastic project partners are running co-design sessions with their peer leader groups who generously share their lived experience and expertise to this important work.

We’d love to share a fantastic real-world outcome from a co-design session run by Deafblind Victoria.

One of the peer leaders shared a potential upcoming access barrier at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT): not being given enough time to communicate.

During co-design sessions, they used role play to practice how to assert their right to accessible communication.

Following the session, they attended VCAT, and the exact scenario played out.

Using the language they rehearsed during role play and their increased self-confidence, they were able to successfully claim their human right in the moment.

We're delighted to see the power of these co-design sessions and the impact of this vital project, empowering people with disability to claim their human rights.

This is peer-led, real-world problem solving that leads to real-world change.

We thank our project partners and their peer leader groups for their valuable work on this project.
